“Leuk” is the Indo-European root that has formed the word “light” in many languages.
λευκός (leukós) in Ancient Greek; “lux” in Latin, from which we derive “luz” in Spanish or “luce” in Italian; the Germanic “leukhtam” from which we derive “light” in English and the German “Licht”. We can see the same root in the Scandinavian languages, in Icelandic “ljós”, in Norwegian “lys” or in Swedish “ljus”.
